Milk bacteria removal

Purpose

Sterilisation of skimmed milk to extend shelf life and remove all heat-resistant bacteria.

Cold sterilisation with Isoflux™ membranes with a cut-off equivalent to 1.4 µm is the perfect solution to this challenge.

Solution

ISOFLUX membranes separate skimmed milk into two parts:

  • a retentate (about one twentieth of the original volume) containing the bacteria and most of the original fat
  • a permeate that is free of bacteria but contains the milk proteins – this fraction represents 95% of the starting milk volume
  • Sterilisation occurs at low temperature with complete removal of bacteria, including heat-resistant bacteria
